Bunny Door Hanger DIY Tutorial

While strolling the isles of Hobby Lobby yesterday an idea struck me and I immediately got into DIY mode. It all started with this bunny door hanger I noticed for $5 prior to the 40% off discount. I stuffed it into my cart as I skimmed for inspiration on how I’d finish the look. Greenery and moss get me every time, and my baby’s perfectly timed diaper situation had me scrambling in a hurry. {side note: Why can my husband scour Lowe’s home improvement for Over an hour without incident, but every. time. I take him to Hobby Lobby I have to leave to take care of a diaper emergency? The conspiracy}

Here’s what you’ll need for this project:
- bunny cutout (this one came with a string attached)
- adhesive backed moss
- sharpie and scissors
- finishing detail such as ribbon and floral
- hot glue gun

I laid the bunny cutout on my adhesive moss upside down, since it’s not symmetrical, and traced the outside edge on to the paper backing on the moss. Then, while keeping the moss facing down I cut out the design. Next, I needed to attach the moss to the wood, but the idea of just tearing off the paper and slapping it on there had me petrified. (Woah, Type A personality.) So, instead I just peeled small sections of the paper off and applied the moss ear by ear to ensure the moss didn’t stretch and lose shape. Once I had the ears and head attached, I just simply flipped the wood on its back and slowly peeled the paper backing off as I worked down the wooden cutout. I did rip off the cottontail so the moss wouldn’t bulge. The adhesive is super sticky, and repositionable, if needed, but I tried to minimize the sticking and ripping off again as much as possible. Once the Moss was completely attached I just pressed it all down once more as I checked the alignment at the edges. The moss is very forgiving, so If you end up with a ripple in the application no one will notice.

Now that the moss was attached the bunny looked a little incomplete. I resorted to my craft closet to find some finishing touches. I emerged with ribbon (leftover from Christmas decor) and a wooden dalia flower (leftover from our wedding decor). I got glued the floral to resemble a bunny tail, and used the ribbon to disguise my command hook on the front door. Originally I tried hanging the bunny with a wreath hook, but he didn’t lay flat against the door because it’s so lightweight (my personality couldn’t handle that— no bunnies blowing in the breeze).

Ta-da!

That’s it!

For around $11 you have a Spring door hanger that will last past Easter.

Let me me know in the comments if you’d like for me to include more home decor DIY. Suggestions are always appreciated. Sometimes I feel like I’m “talking” to the breeze.
