Cleaning Toys
Sebastian is just beginning to play with toys, which naturally promotes the question from my husband about cleanliness.
“How often should we clean his toys? Should we sanitize them?”
I was scouring the Internet for some tips in cleaning toys and came across a helpful website I will be referencing. Feel free to use it too; sharing is caring after all.
I just brought some old vintage; (I say vintage, but really they belonged to my dad abandoned uncle as children) toys from my grandmother’s house home to share with and display in Sebastian’s nursery. Now, you have to know that I have only seen one of these toys sitting in just the same east facing, far left position on a shelf in the guest bedroom of my grandmother’s house for me entire life. Yep. I was never allowed to play with said toy, until now. I brought it home, and I’ll be perfectly honest with you- after I clean it up a bit (hello dust and grime) it will find a forever home on a shelf. It’s just too special to be incorporated into daily play... I can’t even consider tossing it into a toy basket. I won’t. I just cannot. It’s a small FisherPrice radio-I spited music box with a winding dial that plays “10 Little Indians.” I’m pretty sure the song is wildly inappropriate, no longer produced, and thus an antique.
I also brought home a small wooden train, that will first be scrubbed with a baking soda paste before soaking a bit in a vinegar bath. Here’s to restoring this precious train so my son can push it around like husband grandpa did one day many years ago.
Ah.
What is it about old treasures that just have my heart? I’m sure I’ll cry when my son plays with this train- mark my words.
The last “toy” I brought home was an old Dr. Suess book, Green Eggs and Ham, with a 1960 copyright. It’s still in its original jacket and in decent shape aside from the discoloring. I’m really excited to add this treasure to Sebastian’s room—- on the highest bookshelf.
Do your kids plays with toys passed down from previous generations?
I’m also dying to know how you clean your little one’s toys. How often? Do you have a system you’d be willing to share with me?
